Story summary

Cain and Abel were the sons of Adam and Eve. Both brought offerings to God: Abel gave the best of his flock, from the heart. Cain grew jealous when God was pleased with his brother’s offering, let his anger grow, and did something terrible to Abel.

Where it is in the Bible: Genesis 4

Lesson for kids

Anger that is not dealt with grows like a bad seed; God calls us to master it before it masters us.

The full story: Cain and Abel

Part 1

After leaving the Garden of Eden, Adam and Eve had two sons. The first was named Cain, and the second was named Abel.

When they grew up, the brothers chose different jobs. Cain became a farmer, taking care of the land and planting vegetables. Abel became a shepherd, taking care of fluffy sheep.

Part 2

One day, the two brothers decided to give a gift to God. Cain took some food he had harvested from his garden and offered it to God.

Abel wanted to give his very best. He chose the most special lamb from his flock and offered it to God with all his heart.

The Lord was pleased with Abel and his offering, but he was not pleased with Cain and his offering. — Genesis 4:4-5

Part 3

When Cain saw that God was happy with Abel's gift but not with his own, he became very, very angry. His face grew dark, and his heart was sad and full of rage.

God saw Cain's heart and spoke to him with love.

God: Cain, why are you so angry? If you do what is right, won't you be accepted?

Part 4

But Cain did not listen to God's voice. He let anger grow inside him like a bad seed. The anger made him think terrible things.

One day, Cain called his brother Abel to go out into the field. There, far from everyone, Cain did a terrible thing and hurt his brother. It was a very, very sad day.

Part 5

God knew what had happened and was very sad about Cain's choice. Because of what he did, Cain could no longer live near his family.

He had to leave for a distant land. But even then, God took care of him, putting a mark on Cain so that no one would hurt him on his journey.
