Story summary

After the flood, everyone spoke the same language, and they decided to build a tower that reached the sky so they would be famous. God saw their pride, mixed up their languages, and the people scattered across the earth. The city became known as Babel, which means "confusion".

Where it is in the Bible: Genesis 11:1-9

Lesson for kids

Pride pulls us away from God and from each other; what we build should honor God, not ourselves.

The full story: The Tower of Babel

Part 1

A long, long time ago, all the people in the world lived together in one place. They formed one big family and spoke the same language. Everyone understood each other perfectly.

One day, they had an idea. "Let's build a city for ourselves! And in it, we'll make a tower so tall, so very tall, that its top will reach the sky!"

Part 2

So, everyone started working together. They learned how to make strong bricks and stacked them, one by one. The tower began to grow, climbing higher and higher towards the clouds.

They were very proud of what they were building. They worked day and night, dreaming of their giant tower.

The People: That way, our name will be famous, and we won't have to scatter all over the earth!

Part 3

From heaven, God saw the city and the tower that the people were building with such pride. He saw that their hearts weren't set on building to thank Him, but to make themselves famous.

God knew it wasn't good for them to all stay together, thinking they were more important than anything else. He had a different and much better plan for humanity.

"Then the Lord came down to see the city and the tower the people were building." — Genesis 11:5

Part 4

Then, God did something amazing. He mixed up the people's languages! Suddenly, no one could understand what anyone else was saying anymore. One person would ask for a brick, but another would understand, "Get a fish!"

Imagine the confusion! The building stopped right away. There was a huge noise, but no one understood each other. The teamwork was over.

Part 5

Since they couldn't talk to each other anymore, people started gathering in small groups with those who spoke the same new language. The big family divided into many smaller families.

And so, each group went their own way, spreading out and filling the earth, just as God had planned from the beginning. The tower was never finished, and the city became known as Babel, which means "confusion."
