The full story: God Calls Samuel

Part 1

Samuel was a little boy who lived in God's temple, cared for by the priest Eli. He helped with the temple duties and loved God with all his heart.

One night, Samuel was lying down when he heard a voice calling his name: "Samuel!"

He ran to Eli: "Here I am! Did you call me?"

The Lord called out to Samuel. Samuel answered, 'Here I am.' — 1 Samuel 3:4

Part 2

Eli said, "I didn't call you. Go back to sleep." Samuel went back to bed.

The voice called again: "Samuel!" He went to Eli again. This happened three times!

Then Eli understood: it was God calling Samuel! He taught the boy what to say if the voice came back.

Eli to Samuel: If he calls you again, say: 'Speak, Lord, because your servant is listening.'

Part 3

The voice came again: "Samuel, Samuel!"

And Samuel answered as Eli had taught him: "Speak, Lord, because your servant is listening."

God spoke with Samuel that night and called him to be a prophet — someone who brings God's message to the people. Samuel grew up and became one of Israel's greatest prophets!

God calls us by name and has a special purpose for each of us!

Samuel grew up. The Lord was with him. — 1 Samuel 3:19
