The full story: David Becomes King

Part 1

After a long time, all the leaders of Israel went to the city of Hebron to talk with David. They remembered how David had been a brave shepherd and a great leader for them, even before he was king.

They knew that God had a special promise for David. The time had come for that promise to be fulfilled and for him to become king over all of God's people.

Leaders of Israel: We are your own people! The Lord promised that you would be our shepherd and our king.

Part 2

David was very happy and made a solemn agreement with the leaders in front of the Lord. It was a promise to take good care of the people, with God's help.

Then they took special, sweet-smelling oil and poured it on David's head. This was a sign that he was not just a king chosen by the people, but a king chosen and blessed by God.

All the leaders of Israel... anointed David king over Israel. — 2 Samuel 5:3

Part 3

Now as king over everyone, David had a big mission. He and his men marched to the city of Jerusalem, which was a very strong fortress, surrounded by high walls.

The people who lived there made fun of David, saying he would never get in. But David was brave and trusted that God was with him and would give him the victory.

Part 4

With God's help, David and his brave soldiers captured the fortress! It was an amazing victory that showed everyone God's power and the courage of the new king.

David made Jerusalem his new home and the capital of his kingdom. The city became known as the City of David, a very important place for all the people of Israel.

Part 5

As time went on, David became stronger and a wiser king. He never forgot to thank God for everything.

He knew in his heart that he wasn't strong by himself, but because the Lord, the Almighty God, was with him. God made him king so he could love and protect his people.

Then David understood that the Lord had made him king over Israel... — 2 Samuel 5:12
