The full story: Jesus in the Temple

Part 1

Every year, Jesus' family traveled to the great city of Jerusalem. They went for a very important festival called Passover. It was a long walk, but everyone went together, singing and talking along the way.

When Jesus turned twelve, he went with his parents, Mary and Joseph, just like always. The city was full of people, music, and joy to celebrate.

Part 2

When the festival was over, everyone started the journey back home. Mary and Joseph thought Jesus was somewhere in the group, playing with his cousins and friends. They walked for a whole day without worrying.

But, as evening came, they looked for Jesus and couldn't find him anywhere! Their hearts felt very heavy. Where could the boy be?

Part 3

Very worried, Mary and Joseph rushed back to Jerusalem. They searched everywhere. They asked relatives and friends, walked through the busy streets, but no one had seen Jesus.

They looked for him for three long days. With each passing day, their longing and worry only grew.

Mary: My son, why did you do this to us? Your father and I were very distressed, looking for you.

Part 4

Finally, they went to look in the Temple, God's great house. And there he was! Jesus was sitting among the teachers of the law, very wise men who taught about God.

He wasn't lost or scared. He was listening carefully and asking very intelligent questions. Everyone was amazed by what he knew.

Everyone who heard him was amazed at his understanding and his answers. — Luke 2:47

Part 5

Mary and Joseph were relieved, but also surprised. Jesus gave them an answer that they kept in their hearts. He said he needed to be about his heavenly Father's business.

They didn't understand everything at the time, but they took him back home to Nazareth. Jesus obeyed his parents and continued to grow in wisdom and in the love of God and people.

Jesus: Why were you looking for me? Didn't you know I had to be in my Father's house?
