The full story: The Ten Commandments

Part 1

After leaving Egypt, God's people, led by Moses, arrived in a vast desert. Right in front of them stood a very tall mountain, called Mount Sinai.

The mountain was covered by a thick, dark cloud. The people camped at the base of the mountain, looking up with great wonder, waiting to hear what God had to say.

Part 2

Suddenly, the mountain began to shake! There was thunder, lightning, and the sound of a very loud trumpet. Everyone was filled with awe, for they knew God's presence was there.

From the middle of the cloud, God called Moses to go up to the top of the mountain. Bravely, Moses went up alone to meet God and hear His important words.

Part 3

At the top of the mountain, God gave Moses ten very special rules. They were a guide to help people love God and live well with one another.

The first and most important rule was about loving God above everything else. God wanted to be the one true friend in the hearts of His people.

God: I am the Lord, your God. Don't worship any other gods besides me.

Part 4

God also gave rules about how people should treat each other. He said to always respect and honor your mom and dad. This would help them live a long and happy life.

Other rules taught them not to lie, not to take things that weren't theirs, and not to want what belonged to others. These were rules of love and care so that everyone could live in peace.

Honor your father and your mother. — Exodus 20:12

Part 5

God wrote these ten special rules on two stone tablets. Moses came down from the mountain carrying the tablets to show all the people what God had said.

The people listened to God's words and promised to obey. The Ten Commandments were a gift from God, showing everyone the best way to live and to show their love for Him and for others.
