David and Goliath — Family Play Script
Act out the most epic Old Testament story with your family
David was the youngest of 8 brothers, a little shepherd. Goliath was a giant almost 3 metres tall who mocked God’s people. When NO ONE was brave enough, David said, "I’ll go." And he won with 5 stones and a sling. Shall we act it out?
🧰 Materials
- •A broom handle (Goliath’s "spear")
- •A piece of cloth (David’s "sling")
- •5 balls of scrunched-up paper (the "stones")
- •Optional: grey paper "armour" to make Goliath look bigger
📋 Step by step
Scene 1: The camp
One of David’s brothers plays a frightened soldier: "Look at the giant! Nobody is crazy enough to fight him!" David (your child) arrives, curious, and asks what is going on.
Scene 2: The decision
David talks to "King Saul" (another adult): "I’ll go! God is with me. When lions attacked my sheep, God saved me." Saul offers his armour, but it is far too big.
💡 This is a powerful moment. Talk about it: David did not try to be someone he was not.
Scene 3: The stream
David chooses 5 smooth stones from the stream and puts them in his shepherd’s bag (mime it, 1 Samuel 17:40). The Bible doesn’t say why 5, but it shows that 1 was enough: David trusted God, not the stones.
Scene 4: The battle
Goliath shouts, "Come here and I’ll feed you to the animals!" David answers firmly: "You come with sword and spear. I come in the name of the Lord!" David throws 1 stone (paper ball), it hits Goliath’s forehead, and he falls.
Scene 5: The victory
Everyone celebrates. David was not strong because of his size. He was strong because of his faith. TO FINISH: ask your child, "What is YOUR Goliath today? Fear of a test? Of making mistakes? Of talking to God?"
"You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty."
1 Samuel 17:45
